Winter Haven is 9-1 against Mulberry since February of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Winter Haven Blue Devils will look to defend their home field against the Mulberry Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Having struggled with five defeats in a row, Winter Haven turned things around against Lakeland on Monday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Dreadnaughts an 11-0 shutout. Considering the Blue Devils' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Kinsey Godwin made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Those hits were her first of the season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other pitching news, Leyla Roberts looked comfortable as she tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Furthermore, she didn't allow a single walk, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in February of 2024.
Back at the plate, Winter Haven got a massive performance out of Stephanie Dye, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Shelby, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Mulberry had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Monday. They walked away with a 7-4 win over the Broncos.
Haylie Hightower spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on 12 hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
On the hitting side, Kensingten Danforth and Zoe Petersen did most of the damage at the plate: Danforth went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double, while Petersen scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Lylah Jones was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
Winter Haven's victory bumped their record up to 2-5. As for Mulberry, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
Winter Haven took their victory against Mulberry when the teams last played back in April of 2019 by a conclusive 8-2. Will Winter Haven repeat their success, or does Mulberry have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
