Micah Austin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Cooper Logan tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Gunnar Boone, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Canaan Taylor, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Ohio County sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 win over Hancock County on Monday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Like Webster County, Ohio County also got a great game from a two-way player: Parker Westerfield. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Westerfield is becoming a predictor of Ohio County's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 5-20 when he doesn't). Westerfield was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Eli Hatfield was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Keaton Daugherty was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
Webster County pushed their record up to 16-12 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Ohio County, their victory bumped their record up to 7-21.
Everything went Webster County's way against Ohio County in their previous matchup last Monday, as Webster County made off with an 11-0 win. Will the Trojans repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
