Piedra Vista and Volcano Vista are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Panthers will square off against the Hawks at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Piedra Vista has three straight wins, Volcano Vista has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Piedra Vista is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Farmington, who was ranked 19th at the time (Piedra Vista was ranked tenth). The Panthers blew past the Scorpions 17-11 on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Panthers, who have now won ten matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
TAQUIRA HOOD was a standout: she scored a run while going 3-for-5. KAITLYN TAFOYA was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 5-for-6.
HOOD wasn't the only one making solid contact: Piedra Vista kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 20 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, Volcano Vista didn't have quite enough to beat Cibola on Tuesday and fell 4-2.
Volcano Vista saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Neveah Padilla, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Piedra Vista pushed their record up to 14-6-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.7 runs over those games. As for Volcano Vista, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.
Volcano Vista's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Piedra Vista has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Volcano Vista, though, as they've been averaging 11 hits. Given Piedra Vista's sizable advantage in that area, the Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.
Piedra Vista took their victory against Volcano Vista when the teams last played two weeks ago by a conclusive 15-5 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
