Baseball Recap: Tucumcari Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against West Las Vegas, Tucumcari was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They had just enough and edged out the Clayton Yellowjackets 8-7. This was a revenge game for the Rattlers: when they faced off against the Yellowjackets on April 8th, they had to take a 11-10 loss.

Luis Archuleta made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Tucumcari is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-8 otherwise. Archuleta was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Pat Garcia was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Tucumcari's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-2 (and 3-7 when he doesn't). Matt Gomez was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Tucumcari always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. They are 5-2 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Tucumcari pushed their record up to 7-9 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Clayton, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season.
