Petal is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will look to defend their home field against the Oak Grove Warriors at 6:30 p.m. Petal is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.
Petal had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt West Marion on Monday. The Panthers put the hurt on the Trojans with a sharp 13-5 win. Considering the Panthers have won nine games by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Petal got a great performance from Jaley Weathersby as she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Weathersby has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Kamryn Lofton was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Miley Richardson, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Oak Grove suffered their closest defeat since March 27, 2025 last Monday. They fell just short of Pearl River Central by a score of 5-3.
Jaida Jackson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases were her first of the season.
Petal's victory bumped their record up to 11-5. As for Oak Grove, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Petal hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .356. However, it's not like Oak Grove struggles in that department as they've averaged .315. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Petal got the 'W' when the teams last played back in April of 2025 against Oak Grove by a conclusive 15-3 score. Do the Panthers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Warriors turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
