The Mercer Island Islanders waltzed into Saturday's matchup with two straight wins but they left with three. They skirted past Hazen 48-45. Given Mercer Island's advantage in MaxPreps' Washington basketball rankings (they are ranked 46th, while Hazen is ranked 241st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mercer Island to victory, but perhaps none more so than Spencer Kornblum, who scored 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Mautone, who scored 11 points.
Mercer Island's victory bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Hazen, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mercer Island will face off against Interlake at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hazen, they will head out on the road to face off against Bellevue at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
