HERNANDO, Miss. -
Lake Cormorant (Miss.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as
Andy Hernandez kicked a field goal with under a minute left, bringing the team to victory over
Hernando (Miss.) 17-14.
The Tigers pulled ahead on a
Travus McMahon touchdown run, and subsequently went into halftime leading 14-7. Lake Cormorant scored the winning points with a field goal by Hernandez that came in the fifth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, LC still trailed by 7 points going into the fourth quarter. But seven points in the fourth helped Lake Cormorant pull out the victory.
McMahon made a difference for Hernando. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown.
LC's most effective player was
Jeremy Mckinnley. The junior running back ran for one touchdown.
Lake Cormorant went into the matchup giving up only 17.6 points per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which HHS took, 36-13.
The victory was a step in the right direction for LC, which was coming off a 8-7 defeat at the hands of New Hope in its previous game.
Hernando (3-6) will play a 5A Region 1 game against Saltillo next week, while Lake Cormorant (5-4) will take on Clarksdale also in a 5A Region 1 game.
