The Providence Pioneers are taking a road trip to take on the Southwestern Rebels at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Providence's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three matchups, but Monday's contest will give them a chance to turn things around.
West Washington hit Providence with a four-run third inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pioneers lost 14-2 to the Senators.
Providence saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ceci Zeller (2026), who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Southwestern had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. Everything went their way against New Washington on Saturday as they made off with a 17-7 victory. The result was nothing new for the Rebels, who have now won six games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Chloey Leach made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jenna Owens, who went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two doubles, and one triple. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Rorie Scroggins, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Southwestern was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .541. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Southwestern's record is now 9-10. As for Providence, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-7.
Everything went Providence's way against Southwestern in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Providence made off with a 13-3 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pioneers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
