Cumberland Valley has gone a perfect 5-0 against Mechanicsburg recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Eagles will take on the Wildcats at 4:15 p.m. Cumberland Valley's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Mechanicsburg's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Cumberland Valley took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over Cedar Cliff. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matches by six runs or more this season.
Cumberland Valley got a great performance from Curtis Shinn as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Shinn has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Caden Lloyd, who went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Alex Crosby, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Cumberland Valley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.8 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.2.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Monday Mechanicsburg sidestepped Altoona for a 3-1 victory.
Grady Weaver spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Mechanicsburg saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Luke Bencivenga, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Jager Nailor was another, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Cumberland Valley pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Mechanicsburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cumberland Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mechanicsburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Cumberland Valley took their win against Mechanicsburg in their previous meeting on April 1st by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
