San Ysidro is 1-9 against Sweetwater since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Red Devils at 3:30 p.m. San Ysidro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13.3 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, San Ysidro came up short against Montgomery and fell 9-5. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Maya Rodriguez made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Sophia Maldonado was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Trojans as they made off with a 20-6 win. The Red Devils might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 games by seven runs or more this season.
Gabriella Sena was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, she posted three strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.
In other batting news, Tatyana Mosqueda was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Alexa Abarca also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Sweetwater always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .683. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.
Sweetwater's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-2-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for San Ysidro, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-9.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. San Ysidro hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .426. However, it's not like Sweetwater struggles in that department as they've averaged .417. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
San Ysidro couldn't quite get it done against Sweetwater when the teams last played two weeks ago as they fell 9-6. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
