Southport hasn't had much luck against Bloomington South recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Cardinals will look to defend their home field against the Panthers at 6:00 p.m. Southport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Southport and Columbus East, and Columbus East kept the tradition alive. The Cardinals fell just short of the Olympians by a score of 4-3 on Monday.
Riley Matlock was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one double. Those triples were his first of the season. Austin Van Velse was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Bloomington South waltzed into their contest on Saturday with seven straight wins... but they left with eight. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Knights. That's two games straight that the Panthers have won by just one run.
Reid Walker was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Walker was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run.
In other pitching news, Xavier Hemingway looked comfortable as he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
Back at the plate, Jake McCammon was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Palileo, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Bloomington South pushed their record up to 9-5 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Southport, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Southport has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Bloomington South struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Southport couldn't quite finish off Bloomington South in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 6-4. Will the Cardinals have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
