On Monday, Neptune got the win against Long Branch by a conclusive 17-6. The win continues a trend for the Scarlet Fliers in their matchups with the Green Wave: they've now won eight in a row.
Kadidja Braxton made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up four earned runs off six hits. Braxton was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-5.
In other batting news, Lauren Cassidy was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while going 3-for-4. Sophia Forgach was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Neptune always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Long Branch only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, Rumson-Fair Haven had to kick off their season on the road on Monday, but they showed no ill effects. They were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over Keansburg.
Like Neptune, Rumson-Fair Haven also got a great game from a two-way player: Lilee Martinelli. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Martinelli was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Caitlin (Cate) Bush was a standout: she scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Riley Berry, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Neptune's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Rumson-Fair Haven, their win bumped their record up to 1-0.
