Sage Creek and Torrey Pines are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2018, but likely not for long. The Sage Creek Bobcats will be taking part in a tournament against the Torrey Pines Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Sage Creek will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating La Costa Canyon, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. Sage Creek had just enough and edged out La Costa Canyon 3-1.
Elijah Stephens was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024.
Stephens wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jacob Jimenez, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Jimenez has posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Torrey Pines duked it out with Santa Fe Christian on Tuesday. Torrey Pines' pitchers stepped up to hand Santa Fe Christian a 9-0 shutout. The Falcons' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Torrey Pines also got a great performance from Brody Martin as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over six innings pitched.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Dolan Maher, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI. He also scored a run, marking his first of the season. Logan Cole was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one double, and one RBI.
Sage Creek pushed their record up to 3-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Torrey Pines, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sage Creek has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Torrey Pines struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Sage Creek came out on top in a nail-biter against Torrey Pines when the teams last played back in March of 2024, sneaking past 1-0. Will Sage Creek repeat their success, or does Torrey Pines have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
