New Bern proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by six) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 win over the J.H. Rose Rampants. The victory was familiar territory for the Bears, who have now won six matchups in a row.
Anna Champey made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ki'Mya Sutton, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
New Bern pushed their record up to 16-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for J.H. Rose, their loss dropped their record down to 9-7.
