Westport is 9-1 against Avon since January of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Westport Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Avon Panthers at 6:30 p.m. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Westport has struggled recently with six defeats in a row, while Avon will arrive with three straight victories.
Last Monday, Westport was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 52-46 to Carver.
Meanwhile, Avon stacked a ninth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Tuesday. They took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 69-34 win over Calvary Chapel Academy. Avon pushed the score to 55-28 by the end of the third, a deficit Calvary Chapel Academy had little chance of recovering from.
Avon can attribute much of their success to Josiah Guerrier, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 22 rebounds, and Thomas Edwards, who shot 8-for-14 from deep and almost dropped a double-double on 32 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Edwards has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Thomas Irby, who scored seven points along with 17 rebounds and two steals.
Westport's loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-22. As for Avon, their victory bumped their record up to 15-2.
Westport beat Avon 66-55 in their previous meeting back in January. The rematch might be a little tougher for Westport since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
