Baseball Recap: Lutheran Northwest's Winning Streak Snapped at Three Games

Lutheran Northwest dropped their record down to 19-5 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Shrine Catholic Knights. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Crusaders of the 12-3 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

As for Shrine Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

For Shrine Catholic's part, Sean Murphy spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up six Ks. Murphy has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Caydin Barbato was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lutheran Northwest will take on L'Anse Creuse at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Shrine Catholic, they will square off against Clawson at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Knights' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Trojans have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season.
