The Ashford Yellowjackets will venture away from home to square off against the Malone Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ashford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
While Ashford's win against Geneva County wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Yellowjackets narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Bulldogs 5-3. The win was nothing new for the Yellowjackets as they're now sitting on three straight.
Chris Bond made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Bond was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Bond wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jace Ard, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double marked the first that Ard has hit this season.
Ashford kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in three consecutive matchups.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Malone nor Ponce De Leon made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Tigers skirted past the Pirates 8-6. The game was the first time the Tigers have beaten the Pirates on their field since April 5, 2023.
Like Ashford, Malone also got a great game from a two-way player: Kris Smith. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave Smith a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Trenton Jordan, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Malone: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-2 otherwise.
Ashford's record is now 6-2. As for Malone, their record now sits at 6-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Ashford has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Malone struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
