The Cheylin Cougars came tearing into Friday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Briggsdale by a score of 68-55. Given Cheylin's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 100th in Kansas, while Briggsdale is ranked 260th in Colorado), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Cheylin to victory were Logan McCarty and Pablo Bermudez. McCarty scored 19 points along with seven rebounds, while Bermudez shot 4-for-6 from deep and dropped a double-double on 27 points and ten rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which McCarty has scored at least 25% of Cheylin's points. Victor Hernandez was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Despite the loss, Briggsdale still got an impressive performance from Tanner Fiscus, who scored 31 points along with six rebounds. The match was Fiscus' fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Kaeden Gebauer, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds.
Even though they lost, Briggsdale were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cheylin only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Cheylin's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Briggsdale, they have fallen quite a ways from their 14-7 record last season and are now at 1-3.
Cheylin won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Cheyenne Wells at 4:30 p.m. on December 16th. Hopefully Cheyenne Wells focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday. Briggsdale is on the road again on Saturday and play against Idalia at 12:00 p.m. on December 16th. Hopefully Idalia focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Friday.
