Northern Tier 1 recap November 5, 2013
Troy scaled the state rankings by moving to 186 from 212 this week, the biggest jump in Northern Tier 1. The Trojans were able to move up by topping Canton 45-9.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Wellsboro beat North Penn 42-6. The victory was the 10th in a row for the team.
Wellsboro's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Michael Pietropola threw for 233 and 2 touchdowns and Brandon Owlett had 106 yards receiving. On the ground Jermain Brooks contributed 225 yards. Brooks helped Wellsboro's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 63 yards.
Brooks was a force in the backfield as Matt Hildebrand's team beat the Panthers.
He went 19-32 with 0 interceptions.
Pietropola put up the best numbers through the air as the Hornets defeated North Penn. Pietropola's favorite target this week was Owlett, who caught 6 passes for 106 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Wellsboro's Pietropola and Owlett have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Pietropola has thrown for 2,510 yards this season, while Owlett has 39 catches for 1,022 yards. Wyalusing Valley's Luke Jennings leads the league in rushing yards with 1,542.
In 193 carries Brandon Sturzenegger has accumulated 977 yard this year.
Athens and Sayre played the closest game in Northern Tier 1 this week, with Athens eventually emerging with a 15-12 victory. Sturzenegger ran for 146 yards in the win.
