Mountainside hasn't had much luck against Jesuit recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Mavericks will head out on the road to square off against the Crusaders at 5:00 p.m. Mountainside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Mountainside is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Westview on Friday as they made off with a 16-1 victory. The win continues a trend for the Mavericks in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won three in a row.
Tenley Jukkula was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Kaila Reyes also deserves some recognition as she got her first hits of the season.
Mountainside hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Jesuit faced Glencoe in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Crusaders came out on top against the Tide by a score of 5-1. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Makena Boynay was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, firing off two home runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia Hildreth, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Dulcie Cleeland, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Mountainside's record is now 10-4. As for Jesuit, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.
Mountainside's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's matchup. The Mavericks have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Jesuit, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mountainside continue to outrun the ball?
