Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Yamir Knight of
Smyrna is the 2022 MaxPreps Delaware High School Football Player of the Year. The versatile 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior led the Eagles to a 12-1 record and the Class 3A state championship.
Knight helped the Smyrna offense put up nearly 40 points per game, contributing as a passer, runner and receiver. He caught 56 passes for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns, ran for 793 yards and 16 TDs and even threw three touchdown passes.
In a 52-7 win over Dover in the state championship game, Knight produced over 100 all-purpose yards and accounted for four touchdowns.
A four-year varsity contributor, Knight piled up 3,675 all-purpose yards and 45 TDs in his Smyrna career.
Knight committed to James Madison University in July over 10 other FCS offers.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
