For the first time this season, Riverside-Durham will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against the Hillside Hornets at 6:00 p.m. Riverside-Durham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Saturday just wasn't the day for Riverside-Durham's offense. They lost 8-0 to New Bern on Saturday. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Pirates' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Meanwhile, Hillside put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on Knightdale with a sharp 21-7 victory. While the Hornets didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
The team relied heavily on Ava Duncan, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in February of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Khaliyah Pettaway, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double.
Hillside always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .765. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .667 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Hillside's win bumped their record up to 8-0. As for Riverside-Durham, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 3-4.
Hillside's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Riverside-Durham has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Hillside, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Riverside-Durham keep running through batters, or will the Hornets buck the trend?
Everything went Riverside-Durham's way against Hillside in their previous matchup back in April of 2025, as Riverside-Durham made off with a 23-0 victory. Will the Pirates repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
