Basketball Recap: Frankenmuth Falls Despite Big Games from Caden Sommerfield and Ethan Edwards

Frankenmuth fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Freeland on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 67-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Freeland Falcons. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game two weeks ago (55), the Eagles still had to take the loss.

Frankenmuth's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Ethan Edwards, who went 7 of 14 on his way to 18 points and three steals, and Caden Sommerfield, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten assists. Those ten assists gave Sommerfield a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lleyton Hoard, who posted eight points along with five boards and four steals.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Frankenmuth was working as a unit and finished the game with 24 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Leading Freeland to victory were Wilson Huckeby and Tristan Comer. Huckeby almost dropped a double-double on 29 points and nine boards, while Comer dropped a double-double on 22 points and 15 boards. Comer is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last six games he's played. Max Heyn was another key player, putting up nine points.

Frankenmuth's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 6-2. As for Freeland, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 6-1.

Frankenmuth will welcome Garber at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Frankenmuth is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.9 points per game this season. As for Freeland, they will challenge Alma at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Freeland's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four contests.
