Robertson (Las Vegas, N.M.) saw its 11-point lead shrink to five, but hung on to upset
Taos (N.M.) 21-16 on Saturday.
After nabbing the lead on a touchdown run by
Martin Bernal, the Tigers went into halftime with a 10-7 lead. The Cardinals took the lead to win the game on a
Dominic Lucero touchdown run in the third quarter.
The loss came as a surprise for Taos, which entered the game ranked No. 23 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for New Mexico, while Robertson was ranked No. 33. THS came into the game having won zero of the past seven games between the two teams.
Coming into the game RHS had allowed 18.4 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding the Tigers well below their season average of 33.8 points scored per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Cardinals came away with a 18-7 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Taos, which notched a 49-14 victory over Bloomfield in its previous outing. With the win Robertson extended its winning streak to four games.
