AAAA Region 8 recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Eastside, who took down 51st ranked Eastside, 57-56.
Lanier was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in AAAA Region 8. Lanier defeated Madison County 14-7 earlier in the week.
Taylor Grant and Tario Fuller gave Lanier a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Grant threw for 86 yards and one touchdown, while Fuller ran for 171 yards. Teammate Bernard Nuckles added to the ground attack by rushing for 40 yards.
Tomas Colbert had a great week catching the football as Stephens County beat Walnut Grove. He caught three passes for 205 yards.
TJ Skelton provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Red Raiders lost to Lanier. He completed 11 passes for 82 yards and also ran for 100 yards. Skelton's favorite target this week was Malik Freeman, who caught three passes for 40 yards.
On the ground, the Indians' Chaz Thornton has rushed for 687 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Colbert. The Stephens County star has six catches for 327 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Stephens County takes on Chestatee. The Indians are in first place, while the War Eagles are in fourth place.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Lanier takes on Monroe Area. Lanier has allowed 42 points this season, while the Hurricanes have given up 49. Lanier allowed 7 points last week as it topped Madison County.
Stephens County extended the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 8 this week by beating the Warriors, 61-20. The win marks fourth in a row for the the Indians.
