North Schuylkill has gone 8-2 against Tamaqua recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Spartans will venture away from home to challenge the Blue Raiders at 4:30 p.m.
Things were looking good for North Schuylkill after they put the first run on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Pine Grove by a score of 2-1. The Spartans haven't had much luck with the Cardinals recently, as the team has come up short the last eight times they've met.
Meanwhile, Tamaqua came tearing into Tuesday's match with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Eagles as they made off with an 11-0 victory. With that win, the Blue Raiders brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Mason Ligenza made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cooper Ansbach, who fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Jake Yenser was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Tamaqua was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in four consecutive contests.
Tamaqua pushed their record up to 16-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for North Schuylkill, their loss dropped their record down to 5-10.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. North Schuylkill has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Tamaqua struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
North Schuylkill came up short against Tamaqua in their previous meeting last Monday, falling 5-2. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
