The Amherst County Lancers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They fell to Rustburg 40-35. Amherst County was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Rustburg apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January.
Despite the loss, Amherst County saw an underclassman step up: Emmena Awanda scored 11 points along with three steals. Awanda has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Cheyenne Wall, who scored six points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Rustburg's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Olivia Tyree, who scored 12 points. Haven Grinstead was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Amherst County has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season. As for Rustburg, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-9.
Amherst County and Jefferson Forest will face off at 7:00 p.m. on February 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. As for Rustburg, they will head out on the road to square off against Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Rustburg will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Liberty is ranked 67th).
