Baseball Recap: Steward Comes Up Short

Steward dropped down to 9-9 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They lost 8-0 to the Walsingham Academy Trojans. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2025.

As for Walsingham Academy, their win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games.

For Walsingham Academy's part, Chandler Howlett made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over five innings pitched. Howlett has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other pitching news, Luke Rains looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Corey Overmeyer, who fired off two home runs and three RBI while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Andrew Cole, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Steward will venture away from home to square off against Miller School of Albemarle at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Walsingham Academy, they will head out to challenge Norfolk Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bulldogs will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
