Football Recap: New Bern Starts Season with Win on the Road

New Bern had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They were the clear victors by a 32-7 margin over the New Hanover Wildcats on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won three in a row.

New Bern got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Terrance McCormick out in front who threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes. McCormick also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making four total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging an interception. Karvin Magwood also helped with two scores in total.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something New Bern proved: they limited New Hanover to a paltry 1.6 yards per carry. The team can thank Zion Wright for the heroic effort on defense: he. New Bern's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.3.

New Bern's defense also made the game a nightmare for the opposing QB, racking up seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Braylen Cooper and Carel Spencer, who racked up four sacks between them. New Bern got some further help from Wright: he picked up a sack and made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Coming up, New Bern will look to takes advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they takes on Havelock at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for New Hanover, they will head out to challenge Purnell Swett at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
