The Salem Generals will venture away from home to take on the Fonda-Fultonville Valley Hawks at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Salem is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Salem is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over Tamarac.
Stephen Yakubec made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Yakubec wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Quinten Rushinski, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Salem hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tamarac struck out nine times.
Fonda-Fultonville never got on the board in their matchup on Monday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Loudonville Christian on Thursday. They blew past the Eagles 10-1. Considering the Valley Hawks have won nine games by more than eight runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Landon Hamlen spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Fonda-Fultonville got a massive performance out of Sam Huckans, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave Huckans a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kohen Rose, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one stolen base.
Salem has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. As for Fonda-Fultonville, their victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Salem has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Fonda-Fultonville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
