Indiana quarterback
Myles McLaughlin of
Knox has been running toward the record books all season long. And he is on the cusp of owning a few more records after this weekend.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior has already surpassed Charlie Spegal of
New Palestine for the Indiana state record for career rushing yards. Spegal had 10,867 from 2016–19 but McLaughlin has destroyed that mark with 11,389 entering Friday's Class 3A regional final against
Angola.
McLaughlin sits just one rushing touchdown behind the national single-season mark held by both Spegal in 2017 and T.A. McClendon of
Albemarle (N.C.) in 2001. McLaughlin has run for at least five TDs in 10 of his 12 games this season.

With 4,396 rushing yards this season, McLaughlin already owns the single-season state record. The national record of 4,704 held by Dominick Bragalone of
South Williamsport (Pa.) in 2014 is also in his sights. He needs 309 yards Friday to become the new standard bearer after going for 469, 410 and 383 in his last three games.
With 38 more carries, McLaughlin would surpass Charles Salary of
La Porte for
the highest single-season total in Indiana history. McLaughlin averages
just over 34 attempts per game for the season, but during the playoffs,
he is averaging more than 47 carries per night.
One of just five high school players ever with more than 11,000 career rushing yards, McLaughlin currently ranks third on the all-time career rushing list, 674 behind Kelvin Taylor of
Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.) and 735 behind NFL Pro Bowler Derrick Henry of
Yulee (Fla.) with 12,124.
