Penobscot Valley and Woodland are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Howlers will be playing at home against the Dragons at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
On Friday, Penobscot Valley made easy work of Penquis Valley and carried off a 9-2 win. The victory continues a trend for the Howlers in their matchups with the Patriots: they've now won five in a row.
Max Hamel and Scott Lane made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Hamel pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Lane pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. At the plate, Hamel went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run, while Lane got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, Cooper Lindquist was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Osgood, who went 1-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs.
Penobscot Valley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Woodland entered their tilt with Jonesport-Beals on Thursday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They put the hurt on the Royals with a sharp 13-3 win. 13 seems to be a good number for the Dragons as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Like Penobscot Valley, Woodland also got a great game from a two-way player: Micah Chesebrough. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Chesebrough was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isiah Nicholas, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Evan Monk was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Woodland pushed their record up to 7-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Penobscot Valley, their win bumped their record up to 2-6.
Penobscot Valley might still be hurting after the 15-2 defeat they got from Woodland when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Howlers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
