The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Bishop Brossart Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Newport Central Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Newport Central Catholic came up short against Harrison County and fell 6-3. The defeat continues a trend for the Thoroughbreds in their meetings with the Thorobreds/Fillies: they've now lost five in a row.
Eddie Bivens was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. Ben Colwell also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Bishop Brossart). They put the hurt on Walton-Verona with a sharp 16-8 victory on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
Keagen Gulley and Nate Geiman did most of the damage at the plate: Gulley got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one home run and three RBI, while Geiman scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. What's more, Geiman posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Ben Volmer, who scored two runs while going 3-for-5.
Bishop Brossart kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matches.
Bishop Brossart has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. Newport Central Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 3-3.
Newport Central Catholic's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's contest. Newport Central Catholic has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Bishop Brossart, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Newport Central Catholic continue to outrun the ball?
Newport Central Catholic couldn't quite get it done against Bishop Brossart when the teams last played back in March of 2024 as they fell 6-2. Can Newport Central Catholic avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
