WPIAL A Eastern recap October 8, 2013
Alex Lasslo and Brady Cornman provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Wilkinsburg. The connection went for 81 yards, the longest such play in WPIAL A Eastern this season.
Leechburg moved up to 477 from 523 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Blue Devils climbed the ranks as a result of beating Northgate 35-14.
West Shamokin's dynamic duo of Lasslo and Cornman proved to be unstoppable against the Tigers, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Lasslo threw for 90 yards and 1 touchdown and Cornman had 81 yards receiving.
Keir Barber was a passing and rushing force as Riverview fell to Shenango. Barber's favorite target this week was Raymar McCombs, who caught 4 passes for 78 yards.
Apollo Ridge's Jesse Zelonka and Alex Smith led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-0 quarterback Zelonka has thrown for 739 yards this season, while Smith has 17 catches for 310 yards. The Wolves' Andrew Wingard leads the league in rushing yards with 522.
An important game coming up in WPIAL A Eastern this week will be when North Catholic takes on Wilkinsburg. The Trojans are currently in first, while Mike Fulmore's team is in fifth.
North Catholic added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Avonworth, 21-12. The victory was the sixth in a row for Bob Ravenstahl's team.
