Baseball Recap: Cherryville Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

Cherryville waltzed into their matchup on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets a 10-0 shutout. Considering the Ironmen have won nine contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Aaron Heavner and Brock Bumgardner were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Heavner pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Bumgardner' struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Heavner has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than one walk in ten consecutive appearances. At bat, Heavner went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Bumgardner' got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run. Those two stolen bases gave Heavner a new career-high.

In other batting news, Parker Anderson was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two doubles. Kenan Fowler was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Cherryville hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive games.

Cherryville's record is now 14-5. As for Bessemer City, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season.

Cherryville will challenge South Stanly at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Ironmen 3.3, the Rowdy Rebel Bulls 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Bessemer City, they will take on Stuart W. Cramer in a tournament on Monday. The Storm will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something the Yellow Jackets surely won't give up without a fight.
