Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles walked away with it. They snuck past the Cougars with a 49-43 win on Friday. Given Jac-Cen-Del's advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while the Cougars are ranked 212th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jac-Cen-Del's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Julia Meyer led the charge by scoring 20 points along with seven rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Meyer has scored at least a third of Jac-Cen-Del's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kelsey Borgman, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
Makalya Somers and Makayla Puckett certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Somers almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds, while Puckett scored 14 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Puckett has scored all season. Paige McQueen was another key contributor, scoring four points along with six assists.
Jac-Cen-Del has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-5 record this season. As for South Decatur, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-11.
Jac-Cen-Del won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against the Twisters at 7:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Oldenburg Academy is coming into the contest hot, having won their last nine games. South Decatur does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
