The Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders pushed their score all the way to 58 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 67-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of Varsity Opponent.
Mater Dei Catholic lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Lincoln Grogan, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds. Grogan scored a full 25.9% of Mater Dei Catholic's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. John Hawthorne was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Mater Dei Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Varsity Opponent, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 208-772-7 record this season.
Mater Dei Catholic and San Diego will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. San Diego knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six contests -- so hopefully Mater Dei Catholic likes a good challenge. Varsity Opponent will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against Cobble Hill at 7:00 p.m. on December 30, 2023. Cobble Hill will be looking to keep their eight-game home win streak alive.
