St. Johns and Northland Prep Academy are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Redskins will be playing in front of their home fans against the Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. St. Johns is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for St. Johns after they put the first run on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Pima by a score of 6-5.
Brennon Leslie put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Leslie wasn't the only one making solid contact as eight players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was T Platt, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Kingman Academy hit Northland Prep Academy with a six-run first inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans took a 13-10 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tigers. The defeat continues a trend for the Spartans in their meetings with the Tigers: they've now lost six in a row.
Like St. Johns, Northland Prep Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Colson Skersick. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Skersick was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Blayden Cosper was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Dylan Stoffers, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Northland Prep Academy's loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for St. Johns, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-11-1.
Monday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. St. Johns has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .470. However, it's not like Northland Prep Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .453. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Johns beat Northland Prep Academy 5-0 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Do the Redskins have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
