The Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines will take on the Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour Storm in a tournament on Saturday.
Bolivar-Richburg fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Cuba-Rushford on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rebels by a score of 4-3. The Wolverines' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Kylee Whiting spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on three hits and racked up 14 Ks.
At the plate, Bolivar-Richburg saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jayna Thomas, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that Thomas has hit this season.
Meanwhile, Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour came tearing into Wednesday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Lions 15-2. The result was nothing new for the Storm, who have now won eight games by six runs or more so far this season.
Paige Ells and Keira Ells made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Ells struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Keira pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Paige has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. At bat, Ells got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI, while Keira got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Lauren Signor was incredible, going 4-for-5 with five stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs. Those five stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Olivia King, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .590. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .545 or higher in five consecutive contests.
Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Bolivar-Richburg, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
