Newport hasn't had much luck against Calvary Christian recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Wildcats will face off against the Cougars at 12:00 p.m. Newport has given up an average of 16.6 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Newport is headed into Saturday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 45th straight game dating back to last season on Friday. They lost 19-4 to Dayton.
While Calvary Christian didn't have the best season last year (they finished 13-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victors by a 17-10 margin over Gallatin County on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won seven contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Luke Corbin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up seven earned (and one unearned) runs off 12 hits (and not a single walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 5-for-6 with five runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Those five hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Calvary Christian got a massive performance out of Finn Zachary, who got on base in all six of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave Zachary a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Adam Curtis, who got on base in four of his six plate appearances with four runs, one double, and one RBI.
Calvary Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Calvary Christian pushed their record up to 11-3 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Newport, their loss dropped their record down to 0-20.
Newport suffered a grim 18-3 defeat to Calvary Christian when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
