Freeport is 7-2 against Vernon since February of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Freeport Bulldogs will look to defend their home field against the Vernon Yellowjackets at 6:00 p.m. Freeport has given up an average of 10.4 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Freeport is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They fell just short of Donelson Christian Academy by a score of 13-12 on Tuesday. Even though they lost, the Bulldogs' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.1 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
Freeport got a massive performance out of Kayla Stephens, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. That's the most RBI Stephens has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Annsleigh Withey, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-4.
Even though they lost, Freeport hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Vernon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They took a 9-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of Ponce De Leon.
Cheyenne Wilson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That stolen base was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ava Roche, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-2.
Freeport has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. Vernon's defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.
Vernon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Freeport has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.4 hits per game. It's a different story for Vernon, though, as they've been averaging 8.8 hits. Given Freeport's sizable advantage in that area, Vernon will need to find a way to close that gap.
