WPIAL AAAA Northern Eight recap Sept. 26, 2012
Butler moved up to 112 from 144 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in WPIAL AAAA Northern Eight. A 14-0 win over the Golden Tornado helped the Golden Tornado improve their standing.
North Allegheny extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Pine-Richland, 35-3. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
North Allegheny's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Mack Leftwich threw for 221 and three touchdowns and Gregg Garrity had 95 yards receiving. On the ground Alex DiCiantis chipped in 201 yards. Zach Lyon helped North Allegheny's passing attack out by catching two balls for 71 yards.
North Allegheny's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Leftwich has thrown for 960 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while Garrity has 20 catches for 387 yards. DiCiantis leads the league in rushing with 390 yards.
A big matchup in WPIAL AAAA Northern Eight this week will be when Central Catholic takes on Seneca Valley. The Vikings are currently in second, while the Raiders are in third.
There should be lots of points scored when Art Walker's team and Butler face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Tigers comes in having scored 167 this season, while Clyde Conti's team has scored 88. North Allegheny scored 35 points last week as it defeated the Rams.
Central Catholic suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 35-3 loss to Central Catholic. The Vikings had been ranked 25th, but fell to 29 following the defeat.
