The Morgan Township Cherokees are taking a road trip to face off against the Hanover Central Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Morgan Township is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Morgan Township easily dispatched Westville on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Cherokees fell just short of Mishawaka by a score of 7-5 on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Cherokees have suffered since April 25th.
Jett Gheaja was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April.
On the hitting side, Cal Lemmons and Clint Lemmons did some serious damage despite the final result: Cal went 1-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base, while Clint went 2-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base. That home run was Clint's first of the season.
Meanwhile, Hanover Central entered their tilt with New Prairie on Saturday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They were the clear victors by a 15-4 margin over the Cougars. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by six runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Caiden Verrett, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and two stolen bases. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Geoffrey Resney was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Hanover Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .346 or higher in three consecutive games.
Hanover Central's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Morgan Township, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-14-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Morgan Township hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Hanover Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
