Baseball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Mathews

Mathews extended their winning streak to five on Friday, bumping their season record up to 11-7 in the process. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 6-5 W against the Colonial Beach Drifters. That's two games straight that the Blue Devils have won by just one run.

Blake Hunley and Christian Blue did most of the damage at the plate: Hunley went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Blue got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Hunley has become a key player for Mathews: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Jordyn Cosby was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Mathews hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Colonial Beach struck out six times.

As for Colonial Beach, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 12 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-15 record this season. They just can't catch a break and have now endured eight defeats in a row.

On Colonial Beach's side, William Christian was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Christian has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Zachary Papanicolas made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Evan Steffey, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.

Coincidentally, Mathews and Colonial Beach will both be playing West Point the next time they take the field. The Blue Devils will head out to face the Pointers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Drifters will head out to face them at 6:30 p.m. on the 24th.
