The Romeo Bulldogs will challenge the Chippewa Valley Big Reds at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Romeo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Romeo took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Port Huron an 11-0 shutout. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Bulldogs considering their one-run performance the matchup before.
Romeo got a great performance from Emily Dawson as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. Dawson has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Ava Yaklin and Jess McLeod did most of the damage at the plate: Yaklin scored two runs while going 2-for-2, while McLeod scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Yaklin also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Bailey Anton, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Romeo was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Port Huron only posted a batting average of .000.
Meanwhile, Chippewa Valley didn't have quite enough to beat Grosse Pointe North on Friday and fell 8-7.
Frankie Goodrich made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. She continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Mondalek, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Chippewa Valley's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-3. As for Romeo, their win bumped their record up to 4-2.
Romeo's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's contest. The Bulldogs have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Chippewa Valley, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Romeo continue to outrun the ball?
Romeo took their victory against Chippewa Valley in their previous meeting back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 11-3 score. Do the Bulldogs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Big Reds turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
