Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Laurel). They never let the Northwestern Wildcats get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory on Wednesday. This was payback for the Spartans, who suffered a 7-6 loss the last time these two teams met.
Not much got past CJ DeTurris, who gave up just a hit and racked up 20 Ks to keep Northwestern off the board. DeTurris has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Gabe Gilchrist was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-3. Another player making a difference was Engel Pimentel-Castro, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Laurel's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 2-3. As for Northwestern, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.
