Nolan Hooper spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up 16 Ks. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game.
At the plate, Austin Vugteveen and Tyler Gleason did most of the damage at the plate: Vugteveen went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gleason went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that Gleason has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Reese Seng, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Heyworth hadn't done well against Bloomington Central Catholic recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Hornets came out on top in a nail-biter against the Saints, sneaking past 3-2. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Hornets as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
Heyworth also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and he was also dialed-in: Boston Katz gave up only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits. Katz has become a key player for the Hornets: the team is 5-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 10-12 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Heyworth's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Logan Mills, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Yorkville Christian's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-7. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Heyworth, they now have a winning record of 15-14.
