The La Costa Canyon Mavericks will take on the Steele Canyon Cougars in a tournament on Friday. La Costa Canyon's pitching crew has only allowed two runs per game this season, so Steele Canyon's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
La Costa Canyon is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past San Dieguito Academy 10-1 on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Mavericks needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Gracie Camacho spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Norah Coulsell was incredible, firing off two home runs, five RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Sophie Nguyen was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Coulsell wasn't the only one making solid contact: La Costa Canyon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Steele Canyon ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Torrey Pines, sneaking past 8-7.
The team relied heavily on Ily Barclay, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. She also put up a triple, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kayala Hopkins, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Steele Canyon is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6-1 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for La Costa Canyon, their victory bumped their record up to 9-5-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. La Costa Canyon hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Steele Canyon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
La Costa Canyon beat Steele Canyon 5-2 in their previous matchup back in March of 2019. Do the Mavericks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
