Maquoketa were able to grind out a solid victory over Wahlert on Friday, winning 55-48. Yes, you read that final score correctly. Yes, this was football.
Maquoketa got off to a slow start in their game two weeks ago against Marion, but they had no such trouble against Wahlert as they cruised to a 21-point first half. Wahlert had no such difficulty scoring and set themselves up with a advantage heading into the break. The Maquoketa offense took control in the second half, however, scoring 34 points. Finally capturing their first win of the season, Maquoketa advanced to 1-6. Wahlert are still searching for that first win as they fell to 0-8.
Both teams are staying within the conference for their upcoming matches. Maquoketa will take on Western Dubuque at home at 7:30 PM next week. Keep an eye on the score for this one: these teams both put up some lofty point totals in their previous games, so things might heat up even more when they meet up. As for Wahlert, they will face off against Center Point-Urbana. Those two teams have had a rocky road up to this point with eight consecutive losses for Wahlert and three for Center Point-Urbana.
