Even though the Cheylin Cougars have not done well against the Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Cheylin took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 76-38 win over Wheatland-Grinnell. Given Cheylin's advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 98th, while Wheatland-Grinnell is ranked 336th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Pablo Bermudez, who scored 27 points along with nine rebounds and five assists. That makes it four consecutive games in which he has scored at least 25% of Cheylin's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Logan McCarty, who scored 12 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
Cheylin pushed their record up to 6-2 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Wheatland-Grinnell, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-6.
Cheylin will be playing at home against Wichita County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Wichita County and Cheylin are at an even 3-3 over their past six head-to-heads. Wheatland-Grinnell is on the road again on Tuesday and play against Dighton at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Dighton will be coming into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
